I've had the great privilege to make music with some fine writers and musicians but none do I hold in higher esteem than the lyricist and singer of this song, Danny O'Keefe.
Danny has created so many sublime songs he's become sort of songwriter's songwriter to a bunch of great artists. I've heard Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Brown both talk about Danny's work in reverential tones during their own shows.
Thoughtful, simple, artful lyrics laden with rich imagery just pour out of the guy. His "first draft" on this tune came so quickly and was so good it sort of astonished me even though I already thought of him as one of the best lyricists walking the planet. I don't know why I was surprised.
